May 24th 2009 Off Season Update

Well all, the season is over and the JKR Superstock is still sitting in the shed at home. After long discussions with current sponsors and future sponsors, family and friends I decided to keep the Superstock as I have had the most enjoyment racing it.

Soooooooooooo, now that we have decided to keep it,   our FIRST new sponsor has already put their hand up and we would like to welcome abord CSL Cams to the JKR team. Having CSL as a sponsor is a HUGE honour and relief as it means we have an engine specialist onboard so I have a go to Guy in the engine department, whenever there is an issue. After speaking to Daniel Gibbs (The pit crew) he said its best to get the engine up to CSL Cams as soon as possible to try beat the off season rush, and that I did....... Myself and Daniel started taking the engine out of the car on Saturday the 10th May.   Both of us not knowing much about dry sumped engines and myself who has never taken an engine out of a car before... Anyway I think by the end of that day we had taken all but 1 oil hose off the engine and that was it. Sunday was a very less productive day as Daniel was hung over and I was freezing cold ha-ha so all that got done was the bolts on the bell housing got loosened off.

Monday the 12th....

I decided to get stuck into the car today, 12pm I rolled out to the garage knowing I had to take the seat out and dam! What a pain in the A**!!! Anyway I think by the time I went inside that night at about 9.30pm I had the seat, gearbox, bellhousing, dash, extractors, electronics, battery, all oil lines, steering box, radiator, fuel tank, fuel pump all out... I was stoaked!

Tuesday the 13th...

All that was left to do was little bits and pieces, make sure everything was detached from the motor so we could lift the engine out. . .

Friday the 16th....

The Night the engine came out! I want to say a HUGE thanks to Craig Burton 15W for letting the JKR Team use his garage and engine lifter, after a couple of hours the Toyota quad cam was sitting in the back of my Ute with the 77w Superstock only having a diff and front axle in it...

Saturday the 17th....

Took the engine up to CSL Cams and had a good chat to Brendan Locke, he told me what was going to happen with the engine and what he does etc, so I am quite excited to see what next season will bring.

Well today is Sunday the 24th and all is going well with the car. I have had updates on the engine front from CSL.   We have sorted a workshop to do all the steel work in so are just waiting for the helpers to be ready and we will crack onto that. Also we are still undecided on what colours to paint the car next season, we were thinking a black body with a dark grey or bronze chassis with bright Yellow diff, front axle etc.... but I’m still undecided.....

Here are a few pics of the offseason "dismantle" of the 77w Superstock... and what the car is looking like at this current point of time.   I would like to thank Daniel for all his help during the on and off season, always there hangover or no hangover.

Until next time, See you round like a baseball

Could this be the beginning of the JKR Foundation
Hey People!!

Well I was thinking at work today about how I got started in Speedway etc and wondered if I would be where I am today if it wasn’t for my granddad getting me the ministock. As my thinking went on, I had an idea (now I REALLY want your feedback on this as that will make or Break this idea) I thought of starting my own Foundation kind of thing, similar to what Steve Williams has done but on a lot smaller scale.

My ideas were to fundraise enough money to buy a ministock, trailer and spares etc, once that has been done keep the funding coming in and going on to help support the racing season and possibly (if enough is raised) get another ministock. As for driver/s I was going to find or have the public find a young kid who’s really passionate about speedway and really deserves a chance to drive a ministock but doesn’t have the opportunity that I had, and offer him/her the car to drive for the season at no cost to him/her or his/her family. All the gear would be supplied and Licence paid for by the JKR foundation and at season end, the driver gets to keep his/her racing overalls as a memento.

If anyone has any input or feedback or even criticism about this Idea I have, PLEASE tell me as I would really love to make this idea happen and run it the best way possible, so if you think there’s things I could add or change or leave out, I’m all ears for your opinions, I look forward to hearing from you all.

WELL WHAT TO SAY, WHERE TO START?

I will start with the mad rush we had on Thursday night and Friday morning to be all ready. We had a heap of things to do to get the car ready to meet at the Boulton’s Hotel at 12pm on Friday Afternoon. We had to sort out the wheel guards (make them legal), paint the spare body, fix the radiator hose, nut n bolt check and do an oil change.

Well to cut a long story short it took a lot longer to do than we thought and it didn’t help on Thursday night when Granddad was having a moan at me and stopped me from grinding AND welding in the garage (what’s a garage for?!) so outside we migrated, then about 20min later the power in the garage went off! At this stage it was about 10pm so we hooked the Welder up to the house plug point and the welding began. I think it was 1am by the time I made it to bed, anyway I was up at 6am Friday morning to continue the "destruction" myself and Bumble started the night before. By the time we had finished everything and loaded up it was 12pm! The time we were supposed to be at the Boulton’s hotel!! So a quick text to Paul Johnson saying we were running a little late and we were away.

Scruitineering
We arrived at around 2.30pm parked next to the team and went to get the car checked over. Everything passed ok EXCPET those little things that stick out the side of the side rails up the front were "apparently" too pointy.... after racing the car for how many meetings they all of a sudden became too pointy? Also the other thing they picked up was my front head clearance (from the centre of my helmet to the front of the roof plate) it’s supposed to be 250mm and I have roughly 200mm. I was allowed to race that night as it was but needed to change it ASAP.

Off to the track!

I arrived at the track got all set up ready to go had the team meeting and see what the guts was going to be, I was told I was the reserve which I thought was a smart move by Paul Johnson haha. 1st race against Hawkes Bay, Watching from the middle and seeing Murray Long leading with Ricky Boulton in chase I was getting a tad nervous as the laps were counting away... next thing I see is Wildass Worthington and Chris Flett roll Steve Jude! BIG BLOW to Hawkes Bay! With only laps to go Ricky had caught Murray and applied the pressure ad done enough to spin him and take the lead, which is where he stayed for the rest of the race to take an unlikely win!

Race 2 against Kihikihi was going to be another tough one, we talked about who was the danger men and knew what we had to do. after Grant Mytton not making it past turn 1 on lap 1 we knew things were looking up and had to keep an eye on Peter Barry as we know he can be lethal! Anyway, danger man Kerry Remnant was wickedly blocked by Matt, Wildass and Chris which gave Ricky the lead and another win to the Scrappers! This was enough to give us a top of our group!!

Sat night:

As I was hosing the car down at MADDISON CARS I received a text from Paul Johnson saying to gear up I might be in against the panthers as Ricky was having car probs. Arrived at the track to see Ricky’s car with no diff in it! Shit I didn’t think it was that bad!! anyway his crew done a BRILLIANT job of getting that diff back together and in the car ready for race 1, after the hot laps I felt my car was humming but knew I was reserve again unless something happened to another car. As they were lining up on the track I saw Ricky come over to the infield and a flag marshal point at me to move into his place!

I think i was too excited and pumped up to be freaked out! As the race got away Hemi had me in the wall before I could move a meter. . . As he took off I followed but soon slowed into block mode, after having Bengston on my back bumper for a while I had hemi come flying in and shunt me with a decent speed (it broke my exhaust and made my rev counter fall into my lap, also it moved the Left side rail forward about an inch) after correcting the car I tried to have a swipe at Hemi which I totally miss timed. Unfortunately the Panthers were too good for us and took the win.

Scrappers VS Great Britain

Moments before the race Paul Johnson and Ricky Boulton come over to me and said I’m starting off the front row and I am going to be a runner, all I needed to do was go as fast as I can and don’t look back! So that I did! Starting hard up against the wall on grid 2 myself and 03 GB shot away for a 1, 2. after 2 laps i noticed 01gb (Frankie Wainman Jr) was sitting half on the track half on the infield, so 1st time past him I kept a very close eye on him in case he was "playing dead" after realising he was out the race was hotting up, with myself about half a straight behind 03gb who was the lead car. Chris Flett did a good job to slow him up but it wasn’t enough for me reel him in. with a few laps to go (I was counting them down in my head) I knew I had to go hard out and drive the car to the death. . . One fatal mistake I made was hesitating coming around the outside of 02 GB (Tom Harris) as we rubbed cars I tried to beat him for pace as I took off, No Deal..... He had me up the wall and very nearly close to tipping! I tried to start the car but all I could smell was petrol so assumed the car had flooded itself. Race over for the 77s. Great Britain won the race for 3rd and 4th against us and congratulations to them on that as its their 1st Teams and they did a brilliant job!

Overall it was the BEST WEEKEND I have ever had! I have so many people to thank! so here is a list and if I have forgotten you I’m sorry!:

Paul Johnson: Thanks for giving me the opportunity and I look forward to seeing what the future holds

Brian and Aaron Musgrove: for the work you did on the car between races and the advice you gave me which was much appreciated and I can’t thank you both enough.

My pit crew Daniel, Bumble, Matt and Liana: you all did an awesome job of keeping me on the track.

Other drivers pit crews: Thanks for your help and use of tools and advice, was greatly received

Wellington and Stratford Supporters: you guys are the ones we were out there for, it was you guys that gave us the motivation and the support to keep us going strong

and Finally the Stratford Scrappers:

Ricky & Matt Boulton: It was an honour racing with you guys! You two are a class act with heaps of experience and advice and were more than happy to help this young fella out.

Gary (Wildass) Worthington: I now see why people don’t like going around the outside of you! You’re as tough as an army tank and never give up! The commitment that the public didn’t see you were giving was much appreciated by me and I’m sure the rest of the team! P.S I hope your necks better

Chris Flett: Mate as a standard stock driver racing the super you done bloody Well! As a former stockcar driver I know how big the jump from a stockcar to a super is and mate you done a great job and also thanks for letting me borrow your Missus and her lady friend to make my car look good on the Friday night in the parade haha.

Mark Coxhead: our 6th driver! was floating around all weekend offering a hand and finally got a drive against Great Britain, I didn’t see too much of him in the race but I know he can hold his own and would have done as good as he could in a car that was unfamiliar to him.

Cheers for the best weekend I have ever had guys and girls, it was much appreciated and I’m still buzzing from the event (it’s Tuesday night!) and can’t wait till next Year no matter what team I’m racing in!

I just want to finish off by saying a huge Get Well to Peter Barry and to his family you are in our thoughts from us all at JK Racing

See you round like a baseball

30 January 2009
Well sorry for the BIG lack of updates people!

I can’t remember what has happened so to make things easier I’ll just update from the last weekend’s racing... which was the Global Challenge in Palmerston north.

Qualifying:

I had grid 2 in this race, being the 2nd race on the nights program I was a tad freaked out as I have only done a handful of meetings in the super stock and I HATE the wet tracks. Anyway, I was off grid 2 next to Kev Smith on pole, I had a reasonable start with Kev taking the early lead closely followed by Shane Penn then myself. Well that was about as good as it got for me, as coming into the pit corner I got a big shunt up the rear from 77p which (by looking at the photos) he followed through on and put me up the wall. To my disbelief I came down on my wheels and attempted to carry on. Before I knew it my right front was flat which resulted in me retiring to the infield, Race over.

Repercharge:

Since I had a DNF in qualifying I was off Grid 17 (top 9 went through to the finals) alongside me on grid 16 was Murray Long, As the flag dropped I tried to tuck in behind Murray Long to follow his line, Easier said than done huh! As it was, Murray took off and I couldn’t match his pace, as I was, I was sitting dead last so I thought to myself "hey why not cruise it and wait for the other drivers mistakes" and that I done, after avoiding a few tangles I saw myself sitting in 11th on the last lap with 24p half a car length in front, I then felt a tap coming onto the front straight, next thing I know is Murray Long goes FLYING past me (he spun out trying to pass someone earlier in the race) Coming into turn 3 he made a huge dive up the inside of 24p collecting them both letting me sneak up the inside taking 10th in the race (at that stage I thought the top 10 went through to the finals) So I got back to the pits and found out that I didn’t do enough to qualify.   BUT then one of the SNZ officials came over and told me the Aussie Bloke couldn’t fit into his car! With him not being able to race, it put me through! STOAKED!!

Finals Heat 1:

My luck for getting front girds happened again and I had grid 4! I had 24p next to me on grid 3 and 7p and 72p on grids 1 and 2. As the flag dropped my heart was racing and to be honest I was kind of "star struck" getting to be on the track with some of the guys I idolised growing up was a HUGE buzz and memorable moment for me! Anyway getting back to the racing, I took off from grid 4 and was in 4th for a couple of laps before my in-experience came into play and ended up getting shunted wide allowing most of the field to pass. Mid way through the race I was about mid pack (not that I cared as I was having a ball!) getting the feel of the race speed and starting to hold my own and adjust to such a big field, when I looked in my mirror coming down the back straight I saw smoke! "Oh Shit!" I thought as I knew exactly what was wrong, my bottom Radiator hose had blown! RACE OVER 

After looking for a Spare hose and realising our spare was the wrong size, we decided to call it a night and enjoy the racing.

I must say a HUGE HUGE thanks to Adam Groome from Hawkes Bay who was a big Help after race 1 in trying to sort the hose, also to my pit crew Sam, Paul, Dan and Liana for the support, Help and criticism. 
Finally a congrats must go out to Shane Penn 7p, Pete Rees 10p and Kev Smith 64p for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd, Another congrats is a must for the new 1nz Richard Gaskin, 2nz Dale Robinson and 3nz Pete Rees! Great result for Wellington and Pete Rees.

Until next time

hey guys thought I'd do an update from Palmy opening night

Well we rocked up to the track about 5pm when we arrived there were cars for miles, i think in total there was 23 superstocks including 515r Stan Hickey and 19c Malcolm Ngatai.
Before the meeting we got together and Jordy decided to start off the back in all 3 races even though there was grid draws

Race 1: Started from the back of the feild and by lap 4 or 5 Jordy had the hang of the car and was screaming through the feild and ended up 6th.
Between races Darryl Uhlenburg came over and gave us a help with the set up between him and Aaron Musgrove (Brian's boy) they got it pretty spot on

Race 2: Again started from the back and made his way through the feild with big names like Shane Melsop and Malcom Ngatai dnf'ing Jordy made his way through the pack and up into 9th.
Between races Aaron told us a few tweaks to do

Race 3: Well again off the back and this was Jordy's best race of the night he got to grips with the car really well over the night and even stayed on the bumper of Stan Hickey for most of the race he placed 6th in this

Overall we are all pleased with how the car went and we are very greatful for all the tips that everyone gave us a very big thank you has to go out to Darryl Uhlenburg, Aaron Muzgrove, The Groomes, The Melsop crew, Kim Lace and Nick Fowler.

Next meeting will be this weekend 01-11 in Palmy and we are looking at travelling to Stratford the weekend after for the Taranaki Champs 08-11

Also a quick couple of notes Jordy is looking at defending his u23 title in Stratford and do the Charlie Burnstein trophy in Wanganui the next day but we dont have a car, anyone out there with a decent car and willing to lend it to us for the night please contact us at d.w.gibbs@gmail.com, in return Jordy will let you have a meeting in the superstock in Wanganui the day after u23s

Also i will put the confirmed dates for Wellington superstock champs up here to please anyone wanting to race at this ring Kevin Winn

Cheers

Off season comes to an end

Well most of you people out there in cyber world would know the JKR stable has a new car and is in a new class for this coming season, Jordan has purchased the ex 17c superstock of Wayne Anderson which has a lot of history with a couple of big name drivers eg Nick Fowler (5n) and Royden Collingwood (Now 94p) the car is a Kuriger chassis with a Toyota Quad cam v8, after a lot of discussion and thinking we have decided to contract to Wellington as it would free us up to travel more and hey we might start something and bring superstocks and maybe wildcats back to Te Marua but hey time will tell. This season has come up fast on us and our first meeting will be opening night at Palmerston North and we are hoping to do a few meetings around NZ including New Zealand Champs in Christchurch and hoping to do the GP in Nelson

We are glad to welcome back some old sponsors and new sponsors to Jordan Keene Racing
